In 1896, Tom Wilcox, an American Scout, was sent on a mission: to get to know the Philippines. So he set out to understund a young nation in na anguished struggle for freedom against its Spanish overlords, only to be caught in the crossroads of the ensuing conflict between the valiant Filipinos struggling to create their own destiny, and America`s first ambitious adventure in expansionism. Against this backdrop, he meets the fiery, unpredictable Coring, and his consuming love for her changes their lives forever. Coring del Pilar could not resist being drawn to Tom, the unassuming, idealistic foreginer who had come from America with an insatiable curiosity about her country. She welcomed his support for the heroic efforts of her brothers and her countrymen in their struggle against Spain, but felt betrayed and broken when America, the friend-turned-enemy, changed from being a liberator to being the new colonizer. When the Philippine-American war broke out, she saw Tom the soldier taking up arms against her brothers and his friend, and Coring felt her world was coming to an end.
